Raya al pimentón is a particular favourite, made from skate and sweet paprika. Look out for another local speciality, coquinas al ajillo, deliciously garlicy clams Or try revuelto de tagarninas, scrambled eggs with prawns and local golden thistle (a flowering plant).


Typical events and festivals in El Rompido

Like many other Spanish towns, religious festivities are held throughout the year. One particularly important local festival is Feria El Rompido. This is celebrated on the last weekend of July to honour Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or the Blessed Virgin Mary). Another noted fiesta is the Romería de San Isidro Labrador, a pilgrimage weekend in May whic starts in an area of pine woodland close to town.


How to move around in El Rompido

El Rompido is serviced by local bus lines to neighbouring towns and villages. There are also ferry boat and taxi boat services (Flechamar). These take you across the river to the seaside.

El Rompido experiences warm summers with mild winters. The hottest month from July to August can each 30°C+, but off-season temperatures in May, June and October can be very pleasurable too, especially for playing golf and hiking.

El Rompido has experienced a rich history dating back to the Palaeolithic age. Later in the 15th-century, the settlement was often raided by Turks and Berber pirates - so El Rompido became important to Huelva coastal defences. You can visit the ruins of a once-prominent fortification in San Miguel Arca de Buey which was abandoned in the 17th-century.
